Mise En Scene: Props and Costumes

Example: Ender’s Game

Props and costumes are key throughout the whole of the film. Like all films it is crucial that they are used effectively i the oppening sequence. In Ender’s Game that is the oppening battle flashback and the classroom battle.

Firstly in the flashback we see lazers beeming towards eachother and ships flying around in a swarm. We then notice the large mothership in the centre. This enables us to understand that this is a war film between humans (as we see one) and aliens, as the other ships look very unearth like and play on a general hollywood stereotype of how alien technoligy looks.

Next we have the clasroom scene, where we are quite literaly back down to earth. Props play a key role in this scene aswell. The classroom appears to be a science room, as we can see glasses of briht chemicals and tubes in the background. Futhermore we can see the students playing on a futuristic tablet containing some sort of advanced war simulation. This enables us to understand that this is set in the future. Finaly we have the metal chip at the top of the spine on Ender. This futher indicates that this is set in the future and hints that some sort of authority is monitoring or assesing them.
